Nicotine Dependence Treatment Counselor

Serving the people of Southwestern Alaska, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Hospital is a 50-bed general acute care medical facility. Fully accredited by JCAHO, services include adult med/surg, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency room, as well as outpatient family medicine clinics, pharmacy, lab, and imaging.
Position Summary: Initially this position will be one of training to become proficient in delivering tobacco cessation clinical services to clients of the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital. Training includes becoming a Tobacco Treatment Specialist. Once proficient in cessation counseling delivery, this person performs the duties described in accountibilities numbers 1-9 below, including, assisting physicians in assessing patient’s readiness for change stages, accepting referrals to provide cessation counseling, tracking the addiction process of patients, documenting readiness for change status of patients, providing addiction counseling to patients in a clinical setting and following up in person or over the phone, entering data in order to track progress of the program over time. Participates in training for YKHC clinicians and staff on tobacco cessation and tobacco use documentation. Participates in grantee teleconferences, face to face meetings, and special projects. Works in the areas of policy, community interventions, counter marketing and evaluation.
Position Qualifications: Excellent written communication skills; willingness to work with various cultural/ethnic groups, lay people and medical professionals; ability to learn new theories about tobacco addiction and counseling; ability to enter data into a computer program and learn how to abstract that information into reports.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred

Minimum Experience: Four years of positive work history with customers or patients. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability and willingness to become trained to be proficient in tobacco cessation theory and counseling.

License, Certification, Registration: Prefer Wellness Counselor, C.N.A. or CHA but not required.

Equipment/Tools/Word-Aids: Proven computer literacy, including Email, Excel and Word.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills: Ability and willingness to become trained to be proficient in tobacco cessation theory and counseling. Willing to create awareness and change in tobacco use.
