Outpatient Services Chief
Position Summary:
The Primary Care APP Service Chief provides clinical leadership and supervision to the nurse practitioners (NP) and physician assistants (PA) assigned to Primary Care, including specialties such as family medicine, internal medicine, women’s health, pediatrics, and medication-assisted therapy. This role requires both clinical expertise and strong leadership skills to assess clinical competence and ensure best practices. The APP Service Chief will maintain clinical proficiency by practicing in the clinic 50% of the time, with the remaining duties focused on administrative responsibilities.
Key administrative duties include:
Recruitment and retention of Primary Care clinical staff
Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., TJC)
Regular performance reviews of clinical staff to ensure high-quality care and efficient resource use
Collaborating with the Primary Care leadership team to update policies and procedures
Leading and participating in process improvement initiatives in Primary Care
Position Qualifications:
Education:
Master’s degree in Nursing
Experience:
Minimum of 5 years clinical experience
At least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role
Licensure/Certification:
Valid, unrestricted Alaska Nurse Practitioner license
Maintain Continuing Medical Education (CME) to meet state licensing requirements
Skills & Competencies:
Strong ability to assess clinical competence and ensure adherence to best practices
Excellent interpersonal skills for managing a large clinical team
Proven ability to meet the responsibilities of a leadership position
Competency with electronic medical records and other required computer systems
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise and lead a team of Primary Care nurse practitioners and physician assistants

Occasional standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and kneeling
Prolonged use of computer screen/keyboard

Ability to see clearly at both near and far distances (with or without correction)

Typical healthcare setting with regular exposure to clinical situations requiring professional judgment and leadership
Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment with frequent interaction across teams

Key Responsibilities:
Provide leadership and supervision to the Primary Care clinical staff (NPs/PAs)
Collaborate with Primary Care management to plan and evaluate clinic operations
Ensure all staff operate within their scope of practice and licensing requirements
Participate in and occasionally lead performance improvement activities
Oversee recruitment and staffing, ensuring adequate coverage in Primary Care clinics
Regularly review and assess clinical documentation to ensure high standards of care
Conduct performance evaluations and manage disciplinary actions as necessary
Update policies and procedures in collaboration with the leadership team
