Pharmacy Technician-Inpatient
Position Summary: This position will assist the pharmacists and act as a liaison between the pharmacy and the village clinics. Will fill prescriptions in preparation for delivery to patients. Will interact with customers (internal and external) on a regular basis. Will be responsible for billing prescriptions to insurance accurately, and troubleshooting insurance billing issues when appropriate. Will be required to navigate the patient profile in the pharmacy system efficiently and be able to identify and communicate to patients their prescription status, refill prescriptions, and submit prescription refill requests.
Position Responsibilities:
1. Maintains professional and ethical working relationships with patients, co-workers, and the community. Maintains courteous and professional interaction with patients and the public.
2. Assist customers (in person and on the phone) in a professional, timely, and courteous manner.
3. Act as a liaison between the pharmacy and the village clinics.
4. Receives and fills village drug orders with the appropriate medications in a timely manner.
5. Receives and fills ward/department stock orders with the appropriate medications in a timely manner.
6. Packages patient and stock medications with appropriate labels for mailing to village clinics.
7. Checks stock levels in various hospital departments and replenishes stocks to authorized levels.
8. Inventories all pharmacy supplies, checking expiration dates, rotating stock and prepares supply/drug orders to be submitted to vendors.
9. Prepackages and properly labels medications in sizes usable for dispensing.
10. Properly enters prescriptions in the computer.
11. Fills and labels medications for dispensing.
12. Performs auto-refill activities including maintaining computer records, talking with CHA/Ps on the phone, properly typing prescription labels, and filling and labeling prescriptions.
13. Maintains statistics on various pharmacy activities.
14. Performs quality improvement/control procedures as required
15. Attends mandatory training, shares knowledge with staff, and trains new staff as required.
16. Prepares and submits insurance claims to third party payors for patients who receive Pharmacy care from YKHC Hospital, Village clinics, and SRCs.
17. Works with Medicaid, Medicare, and secondary insurance companies for submission of claims, to verify coverage, determine status of claims and resolve issues with the claims.
18. Reviews insurance information in patient medical record to determine accuracy and updates insurance profile when necessary.
19. Works with insurance companies to optimize reimbursement for prescriptions filled.
20. Responsible for properly documenting and processing payments, adjustments, and refunds.
21. Operate a multi-line telephone in an efficient and professional manner. This will include answering and transferring phone calls and retrieving and following up on voice mail.
22. Trains new staff and orients them to the department when assigned.
23. Participates in general or special assignments when assigned.
24. Maintains appropriate stock levels for Pyxis and Pickpoint automated dispensing machines.
25. Prepares sterile compounds for administration to patients
26. Prepares appropriate medication packages for stocking various remote stock locations (Pyxis, Pickpoint)
27. Maintains appropriate labeling and expiration dates on medications used within the pharmacy and supplied to patient care units.
28. Other duties as assigned.
Position Qualifications:
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Must pass basic math quiz.
Minimum Experience: Pharmacy technician experience preferred.
Past work experience should include customer service and/or detail-oriented positions.
License, Certification, Registration: Valid driver’s license preferred.
Equipment/Tools: Office equipment (i.e., computers, multi-line telephone, fax machine, etc.)
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to speak Yup’ik is preferred.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
Ability to work Independently: Demonstrated ability to carry out a list of assigned tasks with little supervision/direction, but also recognize when assistance is appropriate/necessary.
Trained and Competent to perform Sterile Compounding: Completed all required training, testing, and observed competencies to perform sterile compounding and cleaning tasks related to sterile compounding
Trained and Competent to perform medication repackaging and automated dispensing machine maintenance: Completed all required training to become competent at repackaging (prepacking and unit dosing) medication, running pyxis and pickpoint reports (replenishment, outdate, etc.), and loading and unloading medication in the pyxis and pickpoint.
