Patient Resources Financial Counselor

Serving the people of Southwestern Alaska, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Hospital is a 50-bed general acute care medical facility. Fully accredited by JCAHO, services include adult med/surg, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency room, as well as outpatient family medicine clinics, pharmacy, lab, and imaging.

Position Summary:
The Financial Counselor is responsible for the in-depth and detailed evaluation of patient financial history. The Financial Counselor understands the third party payor process and can interpret managed care contracts and other third party payor arrangements in order to evaluate payment arrangements. Financial counselors help to arrange for payment plans and financial assistance for eligible patients and families. Determines the most appropriate form of financial assistance and assists patients to qualify for various programs. The Financial Counselor must be able to explain to patients the process for applying for Medicaid, SSI benefits, SSD benefits, and Medicare, Medicare buy-in programs, Medicare Part D and other public assistance. The Financial Counselor also acts as a customer service representative, assisting patients with hospital billing issues. Screens all in-house and outpatient admissions to identify financial lapse of insurance. Visits patient rooms to gather needed insurance and financial information. Ability to provide training to Admissions and Patient Resources departments as needed. Will update the financial and clinic systems with any changes in patients insurance profile.

Position Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Computer literacy required.
  • Minimum of two years experience directly billing Medicaid, Medicare and commerical insurance. Must have knowledge of managed care contracts. Two years of college preferred or two years business office or related collection experience. Experience in customer service position. Five years IBM or compatible computer system. Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word. Type 40 words per minute and 10-key experience. Held job for minimum of two years continuously.
  • Ability to become a Fee Agent for the Department of Public Assistance, State of Alaska.
  • Experience with Copiers, print, fax machines, and multi-line telephones.
